OUR
HISTORY:
Stewardship Technology was
founded in response to an increasing demand for
utilizing technology in both municipal government,
as well as woodlot management. The dichotomy of
the company structure was designed to provide services
within both distinct areas.
The relationship
between the two is a reflection of our company’s
professional background as well as personal interest.
Extensive experience providing GIS services within
the context of the municipal government serves as
the foundation to provide GIS program management
services. Experience as a woodlot owner, led to
the development of serviceable skills related to
property management.
How We Work & What We Do
Conservation Endeavors
As many of the conservation efforts that we
engage in are dynamic in nature, we look to establish long-term relationships
with our clients. A typical partner is a municipal conservation commission
interested in conservation efforts such as natural resource inventories,
open space mapping, local resource protection initiatives, etc., Other
partners include non-profit land trusts, forestry, and general stewardship
organizations.
We assist our partners in designing an approach to accomplish project
goals, specifically applying forestry, landscape ecology, conservation
biology concepts, and cartography and computer technology skills (GIS,
GPS, landscape metrics, forest modeling, etc.).
A typical scenario includes Stewardship Technology working with a
partner to develop a project methodology, develop a supporting database
of spatial and attribute data, conducting analysis, generating report
and map products, and presenting the results.
Municipal Endeavors
For our municipal clients, we prioritize the
concept of “return on investment”. Our efforts are directed
at maximizing the utility of the GIS. Smaller communities commonly
can not afford a GIS Coordinator or Administrator to oversee their
GIS endeavors, and are often left assigning GIS responsibilities to
staff that are not GIS professionals by trade. The return on the expensive
investment is typically limited to benefits realized in the form of
map products, as opposed to embellishing the concept of increasing
the efficiency in which governments conduct business.
Stewardship Technology focuses on establishing relationships with
municipalities by overseeing or assisting with the complex components
of GIS program management, and concurrently enhancing the internal
use and skill level as it relates to the GIS. Serving as the “rudder
on the ship” is an analogy capturing the intent of our effort
in the municipal environment.
Woodlot Management
The primary focus of our woodlot management
division is to provide consulting services to individuals engaged
in stewardship activities on their property, as well as to the forestry
community. We specialize in providing technical services for assistance
with accomplishing woodlot management endeavors.

Note: Stewardship Technology would like to reference the forest landscape
graphics depicted on the site and express gratitude for the generous
use of them. The graphics depict land-use history, ecology, and conservation
of New England forests, as created by Dr. Ernest G. Stillman. The
Fisher Museum serves as the home to the original dioramas, and in
addition to encouraging visits to the Harvard
Forest and Fisher Museum, we strongly recommend a review of the
materials offered on their web site.
